AD (Carrasco, 1990). Among the many achievements of this society were its "mathematically ingenious calendar, lavishly decorated ceremonial centers... writing, and a complex mythology of the underworld and cosmic regeneration"
(Carrasco, 1990, p. 38). Art was interwoven into the context of everyday life for the Maya and intertwined with their religious beliefs. They were highly aware of their calendar
system as it provided a means for keeping in mind their connection to the sacred forces that the priests had calculated appear on the terrestrial plane (Carrasco, 1990). The ways
in which these beliefs played out in Maya social life can be discerned in murals, such as the ones discovered at Rio Azul Royal Tomb, which is Lowland Maya and
dates roughly from the 300-400s. Murals were also found at Bonampak, which means "city of the painted walls," which was discovered in 1948 (Carrasco, 1990). These murals cover the walls
in three rooms within this temple and convey scenes from Maya court life. Maya cultural creativity has been linked to its profound religious beliefs and vision of the cosmos,
which rests on the belief of the "symbolism of the center," which held that the world was "centered by a combination of the sacred flowering cosmic tree and the royal
person," which linked Maya society to the world of its ancestors (Carrasco, 1990, p. 40). The Maya lived in a cosmopolitan world of trade and contact with other societies, such
as the Olmecs, Teotihuacan and Toltecs, as there is evidence of this influence in their art and artifacts (Brown, 1993). For example, the Teotihuac?n star and half star are symbols
