work, Angelou displays excitement, disappointment and finally, redemption. The Setting This work is autobiographical in the broadest sense, reflecting the authors own experience
with and perceptions attached to her eighth grade graduation. Born Marguerite Johnson in 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri (Bartow), Maya Angelous Margaret character is none other than herself.
Her graduation from eighth grade occurred shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor; after the country had been in the grips of the Great Depression for more than a decade;
and a full generation before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 would legislate against racism and bigotry. At the time of Margarets graduation
from eighth grade, white teachers and school administrators no doubt believed themselves to be magnanimous in the paternalism toward "colored" children such as Margaret. Angelou presents the attitude of
paternalism in her description of the possible life goals that lay before those undergoing such an auspicious moment in their lives. Given the social and economic conditions of the
day, no doubt speaker Edward Donleavy also was recruiting new students for the local high school. Margarets Journey through Emotions Excitement Margaret and
her entire family were present for graduation exercises at Lafayette County Training School. We can assume that all members of Margarets family were excited about the day; Margaret explicitly
