black experience, with its dreams and disappointments, violence and love. This paper compares and contrasts "Graduation" by Maya Angelou and "One Friday Morning" by Langston Hughes. Discussion There are a
great many similarities between the two stories, more than there are differences. The greatest difference is in tone: Dr. Angelous story seems much more deeply angry that Mr. Hughes work,
which has a tone of resignation to it. In "Graduation," Dr. Angelou describes the excitement of the graduation day of an eighth-grade class in an all-black school in Arkansas. The
children are dressed in their best clothes; they are tremendously excited and, with the fundamental innocence of children everywhere, they believe that they can accomplish anything. However, one of
the speakers at their commencement exercise is white, and his address, far from praising them for their accomplishments, is a cautionary tale: they will not be able to rise very
far, since they are really in training only to be menial workers. In a few words, the white man crushes all their dreams. The assembly sits stunned, students and teachers
alike, as this white man, Edward Donleavy, belittles them. He tells them that hes proud of them, and he bragged that "one of the best basketball players at Fisk sank
his first ball right here at Lafayette County Training School" (Angelou 870). Angelou is incensed: what hes saying is that black students can become professional athletes, but thats all. "The
white kids were going to have a chance to become Galileos and madam Curies and Edisons and Gauguins, and our boys (the girls werent even in on it) would try
to be Jesse Owensese and Joe Louises" (Angelou 870). In other words, Donleavy is laying out their future for them, a future that allows them to participate in certain "approved"
