he is loyal and true. He is whole and they can be identified because of their moral fiber. Maxwell cites V. Gilbert Beers a saying: "A person of integrity is
one who has established a system of values against which all of life is judged."1 Integrity is hard to define because it is intangible. It is who we are, rather
than what we are. As Beers said, integrity dictates what we do and when we do it. Integrity is about who we are when we are alone. Do we still
practice the values we espouse in public? What do we do when we find ourselves in a conflict or as Maxwell said, what do we do when we "are faced
with conflicting desires."2 The most spiritual person alive with face this challenge, none of us can escape it. Our integrity will determine which way we do, who wins this battle.
People with strong integrity will always follow the virtuous path. They live by their values no matter where they are or whom they are with. It is not always
easy. Most would say it is very difficult to live by one set of values that are constant. But, it also makes life a little easier for us because living
by a strong set of values resolves issues before we even really think about them. A person cannot really be a good leader without integrity. Think about the trust
issue. Followers must be able to trust the leader and if she or he has not integrity, he will not be trustworthy. We have all seen too many individuals in
leadership positions who brought their companies down and basically robbed the people because they had no integrity. These people either did not have a strong set of values at any
