Too often, these words are spoken because it is the attitude to have rather than because they believe them. People must feel that managers who say these kinds of things must really believe it. Maxwell says this in his own way. He reports that when others ask him how he seemed to always be able to motivate people. His answers were always to be enthusiastic, to lead the way, and to encourage people, among other things.1 But, it did not work for them and Maxwell realized that he was not giving them the assumptions underlying those actions and attitudes. Some of the assumptions Maxwell has about people are: every single person wants to feel that they are worthwhile; every person needs to be encouraged and people respond to this act of encouragement; people will only be committed to and loyal to the vision if they are loyal to the leader; people dont really know how to successful; and people are inherently motivated and become demotivated, not the other way around.23 These are the assumptions leaders must begin with to develop people. Maxwells principles for developing people include: value the people, make a commitment to the people, act with integrity, hold a standard for people, and gain influence over people.4 Maxwell also identified how the successful people developer differs from others, they: "Make the right assumptions about people; ask the right questions about people; and give the right assistance to people."5 We identified assumptions earlier.
