Yet, this quality stubbornly resists categorization. All attempts to boil "leadership" down to a few simple directives has proven futile, a fact that serves to support the basic philosophy of
Max DePree, the former CEO of Human Miller Inc. who advocates that leadership is not a science, nor a discipline, but is rather an art. While DePree is not
currently at the helm of Herman Miller, the company founded by his father, D.J. DePree in 1923, his text Leadership is an Art (1989) is still considered by many
experts to be one of the finest books on the topic. For example, when questioned as to what she considered the best business book, Kelley Mooney, business author and president
of Ten/Resource, an interactive marketing company based in Columbus, Ohio stated unequivocally that this would be her "old favorite" "Max DePrees Leadership is an Art" (Budman, 2002, p. 57). Some
