work has stood the test of time and his approach to art has served to captivate and educate people about the art of painting. In his "Notes of a Painter" we can see into the mind and design of Matisse as it concerns his art. The following paper examines elements of this particular written work and answers some questions. His Goal It appears that Matisse goals or his aim in his painting was achieving a certain understanding. He states, "What I am after, above all, is expression" (131). He indicates, "My fundamental thoughts have not changed but have evolved and my modes of expression have followed my thoughts. I do not repudiate any of my paintings, but I would not paint one of them in the same way had I to do it again" (131). In this we see that his primary goal is that of expression and that while the look of that expression may change, all of his works move towards his destination which is, as he notes, "My destination is always the same but I work out a different route to get there" (131). Achieving Those Goals In relationship to how he goes about achieving the goal of expression he states that "There are two ways of expressing things; one is to show them crudely, the other is to evoke them artistically. In abandoning the literal representation of movement it is possible to reach toward a higher ideal of beauty" (133). What Matisse did was truly study a figure to see what the most prominent points were. He did not wish to show them crudely, but rather find the points that expressed the figure most accurately and obviously.
