started form the day aircraft were first made, moving away from the initial wooden and cloth designs towards the use of more durable metal. However, metal, as used in the
automobile industry was not efficient due to the weight as well as the characteristic corrosion that flying created. By the 1920s a range of alloys were being used to reduce
the weight and resist corrosion (Fallows, 2001). The earliest alloys were aluminium and titanium alloys. Today aluminium alloys are still used, but the early corrosion problems have been resolved and
the produce is one and a half times stringer that those from the early twentieth century (Fallows, 2001). Other problem have emerged,
such as the need to carry heavier payloads, the friction caused by faster speeds and the need to remain invisible to radar, all have been demands that have been partly
satisfied with the materials that have been developed directly or transferred from other areas of industry. The aluminium alloys are still used
in much of the body work of both commercial and military aircraft. However, as aircraft have developed faster speed capabilities the materials used in the engines has had to change.
In early years the engines would have a similar material composition to the automotive engine market. Today the steel and aluminium that was used has been replaced by titanium and
nickel based alloys. One of the major developments in terms of strength, weight and also stealth technology development has been the increased
use of composites. The research into composites started in the 1960s and carries on today. Unlike other forms of development this is an area where the development has started with
