of success. Poor people are looked upon as unsuccessful and wealthy people are heralded as role models to a large extent. While many may believe that this really applies well
to the society in the United States, it is also a reality that is perhaps as ancient as civilization. The following paper examines how characters view materialism in Ramprasad Sens
poem I Spent My Days in Fun and George Sands The Devils Pool. Materialism: Sen and Sand In Sens poem the narrator speaks of how he used to have
a job, how he was always going "here and there making money," and because he had a job he had friends and family (Sen 2). This indicates that he was
not perhaps poor, and that people liked him and hung out with him. He could have been poor as well, but making enough money that he was accepted into the
society of his time. However, he then indicates that things changed and now he is poor. There is the sense that he does not have a job, and because he
does not have a job people envision him as a beggar. But, at the same time there is an understanding that he is doing a Holy mans work, not a
secular mans work and this is where the power of materialism comes in. The narrator is seemingly moving away from any reliance on materialism and the people around him do
not like this. "My friends/ and relations will stack up the beir/....and say/ so long to the old boy/ in his holy mans getup" (Sen 7-11). In this one can
