to be a necessary evil in order for society to continue to change and grow. Since the beginning of time, materialism has existed. How else can we account for
man creating the wheel and learning to make fire on his own? Jewelry made out of animal bone and wood prove that women were also capable of materialism early in
life. This has not changed at all. The only thing that has changed, is that the items have become flashier and we have become greedier as access to these products
have fed into our desires for material things. Materialism and happiness are negatively related to quality of life (Roberts & Clement, 2007). A strong desire for possessions causes people
to work harder in order to obtain these items. High status jobs usually involve sitting at a desk for long periods of time. Hours at a desk means these people
become lumps of clay in front of a computer, which means they lose appreciation for the outside world and gain weight from a lack of movement. Families and friends can
become neglected or used for competition in extreme materialism. Objects become life for these people, which is never a quality way to live. Products that are considered to be status
symbols tend to be negatively related to product satisfaction, but products that are not connected to status do not affect materialism or happiness (Wang & Wallendorf, 2006). If you
