Materials management can have a profound effect on total cost of health care. The supplies, equipment and consumable goods needed in the course of a day at a single care-providing location can be astounding. Specialized clinics and offices addressing only a limited number of types of conditions can plan better for material needs than can a hospital that cannot know from day to day what its new patient load will be and what incoming patients might need. These care providers still can take steps to ensure that they gain and retain efficiency in handling the materials they must have accessible to care-giving personnel. A Glove Example Hospitals and large clinics use far too many supplies to try to track all of them or even a specific product class. All care providing organizations use latex gloves, however, particularly in this day of blood-borne diseases. Gloves used for examinations typically are different from those used for surgery.
