ignorance of ones upbringing as it relates to race and humility. The character of Harold, Hally, is one that has the opportunity to grow into a noble and more honest
and real man but instead he chooses a reality he knows, the common reality which he was raised in. The following paper examines this character and how he relates to,
and chooses, the common reality of his father and many white men. Master Harold...and the Boys In life all people must face a common reality, adjust to it,
fight it, or otherwise find a way to respond to it. The common reality is different for different people depending on their social position, their culture, the nation in which
they live, and the family environment in which they live, or were raised within. All people must essentially find their own identity and come to terms with their common reality.
Harolds story is very much a story about responding to a common reality. It is perhaps important to understand that the common reality in this work could be seen
as the reality of the Africans who Harold is friends with, for a short time it would seem, or the reality of Harold and the white people in Africa. Harold
has to ultimately choose which reality he prefers, or which reality he belongs to. In his world, the world of a privileged white man, he is clearly more influenced by
the common reality of the white man in Africa as opposed to the black man in Africa. The play, however, examines this transition, this point in Harolds life when
he has to choose which reality he would prefer to follow. Harold/Hally is 17 and he is the son of a relatively well-to-do white man in Africa. His father is
