for places that are different than what they see every day. It seems the more exotic a location, the more tourists flock there. Knight commented that no area is safe
from tourism "From the most remote island in the Pacific to the deepest valley in the Himalayas and the driest sand dune in the Sahara," tourism has left its mark
(Knight, 1997, p. 41). Mass tourism is a big business employing as many as 10 percent of the population in some areas. Travel and tourism generates about $450 billion annually
and that is expected to grow to $3 trillion by 2010 (Knight, 1997). This is an industry that is greatly influenced by politics and economic turns. Natural
disasters, such as hurricanes, may curtail travel to that region for a short period of time but the tourists flock back. The same is true of criminal activity, such as
the attacks on German and British tourists in Miami in the early 1990s (Roberts, 1998). Political unrest and terrorist activities may also eliminate tourism in regions but as soon as
that is resolved, the travelers return. Mass tourism is far more organized today than it once was. The World Travel and Tourism Council is a lobby group whose members
include airlines, hotel chains and travel agents (Roberts, 1998). They work together to compete for the consumers dollar. Mass tourism is not going to decline, it will continue growing as
