plan out a mass attack on the students at their school. Theorists have argued two major influences on these two young men: peer pressure and media pressure, both
of which were perceived as possible influences that shaped the choices of these young men. While it is likely that peer pressure played some part in the choice to
enact the violence against those in their own community, the mass media most likely played a greater role in influencing the timing and long-term planning for this type of event.
Mass murders are individuals who make a planned attack against more than one person, and can do this either at one time or over the course of a
period during which they murder more than one person. Often times, mass murderers are individual who seek out certain populations, certain types of people, and selectively murder these individual
in a planned manner. Eric Haris and Dylan Klebold both fit the description of the mass murder; they both made determined plans, they sought out a specific population and
they determined the best route to murdering those at their own school. Harris and Klebold are not the first individual to take this kind of action against others in
a collective, nor were they the first to seek vengeance on individuals in their own school: just the year before, Kip Kinkle enacted the same kind of vengeance-based mass
murder on the people of Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon. The violent-crime rate for populations of juveniles nationwide has increased significantly between 1967 and 1996, according to statistics provided
by the FBI (Trugman, 1999). In fact, the crime rate has increased a full 143 percent in that period, but jurisdiction reports about the nature of juvenile arrests fluctuate
