That might be a leap, but certainly, mass media does have an effect on elections and thus inadvertently on a number of things. It also seems to directly affect the point of view of individuals and so, one has to wonder what is the purpose of mass media? In a capitalist country, mass media is a business. That is, the government does not control it, and it should not do so. Some have suggested that there is a great deal of propaganda appearing despite the fact that the media is arguably not heavily regulated. Why? Mass media, like any other business, runs on profits. Baker remarks: "Private firms will not provide some media content that an audience wants - content whose value as measured by willingness to pay is greater than its cost. In these cases, no price exists at which the media product can be profitably sold even though its value to potential consumers is greater than the cost of supplying them" (20). One can see that economics and mass media are inextricable. The media thrives on ratings, which is why there are so many scandals and issues involving controversial topics. People want to see these things. It is human nature. The media feeds this unhealthy desire that people have to view negative stories. Different theories may help to explain the relationship between media and society. The media dependency hypothesis for example, as noted by Adoni and Mane, forges a relationship between media research and the construction of reality (McCombs, Shaw and Weaver 41).
