job. This is most effectively accomplished when one understands something about the psychological needs of ones employees. For this reason, models of behavior and motivation from psychology have been historically
useful to organizational leaders. One of the most effective to date has been the Heirarchy of Needs, set forth by Abraham Maslow. By understanding Maslows hierarchical depiction of human needs,
leaders can better understand "where employees are coming from", in regards to their needs, and as such engage in higher quality communication and provide the resources that are needed to
ensure that employees have what they need to thrive. This paragraph helps the student present a summary of Maslows hierarchy of needs. Maslows hierarchy of needs developed out of
his early experiences observing the behavior of primates; in the course of these studies, he recognized that an individuals needs can be categorized by priority, and that anxiety and stress
increases when the more basic and fundamental categories of needs go unmet (Boeree, 2006). The implication is that it is not possible to adequately meet the "higher" categories of needs
until those in the "lower" categories are met. Moving level by level, the most basic needs represented in Maslows hierarchy are the physiological needs (Boeree, 2006). These are the
most fundamental of all needs, such as the bodys natural requirements of oxygen and various vitamins and minerals in order to function, or the need to perform certain functions to
