that psychologists had spent far too much time cataloging humanity failings, rather then its strengths, Maslow devoted his studies to delineating the psychologically healthy person (Holme, 1972, p. 446).
Maslow saw human behavior as originating out of a desire to fulfill certain basic emotional and physical needs. He differentiated between "basic needs" and "metaneeds" (Holme, 1972, p. 446). Basic
needs include such things as hunger, affection, security and self-esteem (Holme, 1972). Metaneeds consist of such things as justice, goodness, beauty, order
and unity (Holme, 1972). Basic needs represent deficiency needs, but metaneeds are growth needs; however, to get to the metaneeds, the basic needs have to be fulfilled. Basic needs are,
therefore, hierarchical in nature and metaneeds have equal value (Holme, 1972). Hunger is the most basic of Maslows needs. Despite the emphasis on good dietary habits and exercise
that has prevailed for decades, Americans still just keep getting fatter every year. Problems associated with obesity are rampant and continue to increase (Williamson, 1999). Drugs to decrease appetite have
been around for years, but they either dont work very well, or have turned out to have deadly side effects. The newest
candidate drug for the US market is "orlistat, a gastrointestinal llpase inhibitor that prevents absorption from the gut of about 30% of dietary fat" (Williamson, 1999, p. 278). Two trials
have been published to date. The first study involved nondiabetic obese northern Europeans (Williamson, 1999). The second study encompassed obese Americans with type 2 diabetes (Williamson, 1999). The two-year
