on the concept of economic man the ideas of motivation have moved forward aided by theorists looking at man as social, such as Mayo and the Hawthorne studies and more
detailed and prescriptive theories following research, such as those of Maslow and Hertzberg, which have enabled workplaces to be managed in order to maximise productivity as a result of understanding
the way employees are motivated. It may be argued that these ideas have emerged following the development of modern economic structures. With the development of motivation models based a developed
economy it may be questionable how applicable these models will be in developing countries at earlier stages of economic development. To asses this the models of Maslow and Herzberg need
to be assessed to consider how they may, or may not, apply to developing nation conditions. Maslow and Hertzberg both adopted the
approach of social man in the way that they developed theories on motivation (Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007). Maslows hierarchy of needs is divided into higher and lower orders. The lower
order needs start with basic needs, such as biological and physiological needs, such as food and shelter, sleep and sex. Then comes the safety needs, such as the need for
stability and security, following this there is the need to feel belonging, which may be part of a family or part of a community, along with the affections and development
of relationship. Esteem needs are the next stage, where employees need to gain skills and develop, the need for recognition is seen at this stage, the last stage is that
