It then discusses the applicability of Maslows theory of human motivation to the classroom. Introduction and Background Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the school of humanistic psychology. The word "humanistic" has negative context in some circles, but Maslow did not equate humanism with hedonism as so many others do today. The psychoanalysis that existed when Maslow published his theory of human motivation in 1943 was that which was focused on abnormalities and deviance. Psychologists were far more likely to study what could be considered unusual or psychopathic, but it was Maslows contention that it should be happy and well-adjusted people who should provide models for study. If the purpose of psychoanalysis was to bring deviance back around to mainstream and effect the greatest good among people, then psychologists should study the qualities of the happy and well-adjusted. It was only these individuals that collectively could provide the image of a goal for practicing psychoanalysts. His later refinement of the theory produced Maslows hierarchy of needs, and Maslows assertion that individuals could not progress to higher levels of the pyramid until the needs of the lower levels had been met.
