pyramid with the bottom level representing the greatest level of need. The first four levels, beginning at the bottom, are deficiency needs: physiological or survival needs, safety needs, belonging needs
and esteem needs (Huitt, 2004). The next levels are growth needs and proceed as cognitive needs, aesthetic needs, self-actualization and self-transcendence (Huitt, 2004). The two highest levels are often referred
to as "Being Needs" or "meta-needs" (Boeree, 2006). Few people reach these levels. Maslows needs/growth theory makes a lot of sense because an individual who does not have adequate
shelter and/or food will not be motivated by cognitive development. As the needs at each level are met, the individual becomes driven for the needs identified at the next level.
Managers may believe their employees needs are met just because they have the job but this is not necessarily true. For instance, a minimum wage job with no
benefits does not provide the employee a truly livable income. Also, since most people vacillate between needs and even regress, companies need to be aware of how these needs work.
Another example, an employee who would normally be at a higher level, say, at the aesthetic needs level is in a long meeting and becomes extremely hungry. They are now
focused on eating and cannot really concentrate on anything else. Their hunger distracts their ability to think and process. Wheel, Inc. has employees who are just earning a livable
wage. They are paid more than minimum wage, they receive health benefits but the deductibles are high so they are always worried. The company needs to increase the wages of
