Mary is the focus of devotion for millions of Catholics worldwide. The devotion accorded to Mary equals, and even exceeds, the devotion offered to her son. Therefore, it is not
surprising that considerable theological and secular scholarship has been devoted to examining this religious phenomenon. The following literature review on Marian scholarship will examine issues now being examined in regard
to Marian devotion, looking at both theological and secular sources. Potzella, et al (2002) conducted a study that exposed over a hundred college students to digitized facsimiles of art works
that depict the Virgin Mary. The art works varied in style, with works from the pre-Renaissance, Renaissance and post-Renaissance periods. This study found that viewer reactions were significantly
affected by the style and content of the works depicted. For instance, the newer works were seen as having greater power and clarity than the older style works, with the
effect being greater for event depictions over devotional images (Potzella, et al, 2002). Gender differences in reactions were also noted. As this illustrates, Marian scholarship encompasses a wide range of
investigation. Haarmann (1998) argues that Marian devotion is unique in the modern world, but has its roots in the goddess worship in the ancient civilizations that grew up around
the Mediterranean. Haarmann asserts that Marian devotion continues "the ancient goddess cults, and, thus, is a reflection of their heritage" (1998,p. 17). A great deal of Haarmanns argument rests
on the fact that Christianity, as experienced in Catholic or Orthodox communities throughout the world, is unique in that Marian devotion is a "distinctive property" that is absent from
other monotheistic religions. Furthermore, Haarmann (1998) argues that neither scripture nor later commentaries are sufficient to explain the question of what inspires Marys immense popularity among Christians of all eras.
