In addition to being an intriguing tale, Frankenstein has an underlying message. In fact, Shelley was likely sending a variety of messages as the work is replete with symbolism as
well as intriguing propositions. One theme is that mans place and purpose in the universe is, according to Shelley, rather insignificant. However, at first it appears that the author is
saying quite the opposite. Few authors have dared to suggest that man was at the center of the universe but one can understand how Shelley might have seen man through
her portrayal of Dr. Frankenstein. While many would suggest that Shelley is rather bold in depicting a man with such great power, or the power to create another human being,
the reality is now--in a time much later than the work was created--scientists are experimenting with the creation of life. Towards the end of June, 2000, the completion of the
initial sequencing of the genome had been announced. A significant discovery, with a great deal of medical ramifications, this scientific breakthrough may certainly prove more dangerous than Dolly. Dolly was
the sheep that was cloned in 1996 and caused an uproar. But these large strides for man in understanding his own makeup is nothing new. After all, for decades there
has been much experimentation with creation. Test tube babies somehow evolved into the concept of designer babies and couples trying to conceive have a variety of outlets. Today, surrogate parenting
makes it possible for a baby who has the genetic materials from both his parents to grow inside another womans uterus. Who is his mother then? Other areas of
concern have emanated from the selling of sperm and eggs by supermodels and brainiacs. The list of ethical predicaments can go on and on. Mary Shelley was ahead of her
