Bysshe Shelley, her exposure to Miltons Paradise Lost and the Romantic notions of the myth of Prometheus. But what she produced was an enduring work of art which has
remained popular for nearly two centuries, and which has been reinterpreted by each age to fit its own concerns. Mary Shelley was born in 1797, the daughter of two progressive
thinkers, William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft. Her father also was a novelist, and influenced her writing of Frankenstein with his own Promethean writings. Given a good education, and
showed an early flair for fiction. At 17, she ran off with the poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley who was still married at the time. Two years later, his
wife committed suicide, and he and Mary were married. It was at this time that she wrote Frankenstein while spending the summer in Geneva, Switzerland with Shelley and Lord
Byron. The novel was conceived as part of a competition between the three to tell some form of horror story for the amusement of all. During her marriage to
Shelley, she had three children. In 1822 when she was 25, Shelley died, drowned at sea. As a young widow with children, living in Italy, she turned
to her writing to make a living. She also received a small stipend from Shelleys family against his inheritance. Mary spent the remainder of her life raising
her children, editing Shelleys works and papers, and writing her own novels. She died at the age 53 in 1851 (Sparks). Frankenstein tells the story of a
physician who seeks to create life, entering into the province of God. In terms of characterization it owes much to the legend of Prometheus and to the Romantic idea
