is a perfect illustration of the adage, "Pride goeth before a fall." This essay discusses the way in which Shelley explores the theme of pride in her work. Discussion The
theme of pride is the driving force behind Mary Shelleys story, but it seems to take three different forms and change somewhat throughout the tale. At first, pride is something
the author revels in; that is, he enjoys being proud and difficult. Then he begins to understand that it is pride that has caused his problems and he beings to
let go of it; finally, he has no pride left, and returns to Genoa to try to make amends. The narrator, Guido, opens the story by saying that he
has heard that when people go through some sort of strange or supernatural experience, they usually try to keep it secret, but at times feel they have to talk about
it to someone else (Shelley). This is true of him; hes sworn never to tell what happened: "I have dearly sworn to myself never to reveal to human ears the
horrors to which I once, in excess of fiendly pride, delivered myself over" (Shelley). The use of the word "fiendly" is telling, since it calls to mind the pride of
