as well. "Her mother was Mary Wollstonecraft, a writer famous for A Vindication of the Rights of Women (1792) and The Wrongs of Women. Marys mother only lived ten days
after giving birth" (Lombardi, 2007). Mary was born in 1797 (Lombardi, 2007). Her father was William Godwin, also a writer involved with social problems (Lombardi, 2007). For the most
part her education was left up to her: "In her childhood Mary Shelley was left to educate herself amongst her fathers intellectual circle" (Books and Writers, 2007). In essence "Mary
Shelley was a self-educated writer and student of literature, with famous men like Charles Lamb, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Percy Bysshe Shelley making up her fathers intellectual group of friends
and aquaintences" (Lombardi, 2007). At the age of ten she wrote her first poem (Lombardi, 2007). When she was only 16 years old she ran off with Percy Bysshe Shelley
and then married him in 1816 (Books and Writers, 2007). They returned to England and she gave birth to their first child (Books and Writers, 2007). It was also in
the year of 1816 that Mary began to write her infamous novel Frankenstein. "She took a challenge, set by Lord Byron, to write a ghost story. With her husbands encouragement,
she completed the novel within a year" (Books and Writers, 2007). Two years after beginning the novel, in 1818, they moved to Italy and they stayed there until Percy
died in a storm in 1822 (Books and Writers, 2007). In 1819 Mary had something of a nervous breakdown as their child, William, died when he was three years old
