intergenerational relations and communication between the generations. Another country (Chapter 1): To the young, and even to the middle aged, old age often seems remote, "an undesirable period of
life" (Hooyman and Kiyak 1). Old people, Pipher explains, are living in "a world designed for young people" (Pipher 5). Many older adults are no longer able to drive, or
handle stairs, or read the small print in books or menus (Pipher 5). Finding a place for themselves in this new and different world in which aging has placed them
really is like arriving in a foreign land, which is a metaphor that Pipher relates is at least 1500 years old (Pipher 15). The fears of aging and old
age that are frequently expressed within Western society evolve, at least partially, from the changes in social status that occur as a person reaches their seventies, eighties, etc. (Hooyman and
