the student is using for this course. Therefore, it seemed to me that the best approach was to provide a discussion of five themes in Piphers book, which the student
can then use in conjunction with the text to fulfill the requirements of the assignment, as the student composes their own paper. This also takes better advantage of the limited
number of pages purchased for this research. (This aside to the student was not counted in the page total). In the first chapter to her text, Mary Pipher describes
old age as "another country, pointing out that this metaphor is at least 1500 years old (15). In this chapter, the author explores the "terrain" of old age. Through case
studies, Pipher explores the complex dependency issues that complicate intergenerational relationships in the US. For example, she relates the case of Randy (age 58) and his mother, Lois (age 86).
Throughout the earlier part of her old age, Lois was lived independently in a Florida condo, happy with her friends and her lifestyle. Pipher refers to the period when older
Americans are still relatively healthy, active and capable of living independently as their "young-old age" (33). However, the effects of aging eventually caught up with Lois and needed to be
