Literature, in short, is many things and it often carries some moral teaching or thought, some perspective on human value. The following paper looks at the element of human value
and morality in the short stories of Mary Gaitskills work "Bad Behavior." The paper discusses four different short stories: "Trying to be," "Secretary," "Other Factors," and "Heaven." Mary Gaitskills
Bad Behavior Trying to Be In this story the prime character is a woman who seems completely lost in her current state in society. She is lost because she is
out of work, and lost because she does not know where to go from the position she is in at the point of the story. She has no real passion
about life it seems, and no motivation to really get a job or do much of anything with her life. She becomes involved sexually with a man who wants
to pay her for her sexual favors. They are, however, friends it seems. He tells her, "Stephanie, its very simple. I have a lot of money. You do not. You
need money. I can give it to you. Please take it" (123). At first she refuses and then she finds it acceptable to her. While one can honestly perhaps understand
her position, for she did need the money and she did used to be a prostitute, one can also see that she does not value herself very much. In this
