in his day. For this sociologist, religion is the opiate of the people. Marx writes: " The foundation of irreligious criticism is: Man makes religion, religion does not make man.
Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again." For Marx, religion is like a
drug that helps people through things. It is not real. It is socially constructed and so, it stands to reason that religion is something that is meaningless. In other words,
if there were a God, that would be an objective fact and something that requisites attention. After all, if one accepts the Judeo-Christian God, one accepts that he is endowed
with all sorts of powers which would render one in trouble if one strays from a particular dictum. This is frightening and comforting at the same time. In fact, people
cling to the notion that there is a God, and religion is valid, so that they will feel comforted. They know that their existence will continue and the thing that
people are most afraid of-death-is something that is comprehended as tolerable. Death becomes better than life because in death, there are more choices and better opportunities. It is the life
on Earth that is considered the temporary and difficult time. Yet, to get to the better world, one has to follow the rules. Again, it is a comforting thought and
for Marx, man constructs a reality based on this sense of comfort. Marx criticizes religion for the most part because it is not real. It is a rather simple
