wealth. For Marx, capitalism is a stepping stone to better things. Yet, aside from wealth creation, capitalism seems inherently unfair. According to Marx, communism is the only solution to a
life of alienation and greed and it will only come about through revolution. That said, it seems that today, capitalism is what is applauded, and communism has been given a
negative review. Why does Karl Marx see capitalism in such a negative light? The crux of the problem is not that people get rich. That would be a nice part
of any model because money is good. Even if not everyone could have riches, and class envy would result, at least there is opportunity. Today, many see capitalism as providing
such opportunities. But even more people know the realities of life. It is not one large opportunity after another. People are given jobs but then they have to be responsible.
They have to pay the rent, and purchase insurance, and a host of other things. At the end of the month, there is little left over for much other than
the bare necessities. The play Rent exemplifies the problem. When squatters suddenly have to come up with a years worth of rent, they realize that they may not be
able to survive. They only have to come up with the money because an old, poor friend married a rich capitalist. A haven for artists and musicians, creativity flourishes in
Alphabet city, but will they? The larger problem is not really the rent. That is just a symbol. Overall, the characters are plagued with addiction and disease, a result of
