come before socialism as well, but socialism and communism were better than capitalism because under these latter paradigms the people would not suffer from the economic harm done to them
via capitalism. There are different camps in economic and political thought, and it seems that Marxists and utopian socialists are very much alike, but there is definitely a difference.
Before comparing Marxism with utopian socialists, a look at Marxism is appropriate. The essence of Marxism is his theory of economic determinism. Economic determinism, above all, embraces the notion
that economic factors are integral to political and historical developments. The thesis that comes through in Marx and Engels Communist Manifesto suggests that everything is intertwined with money and that
even when motivation or habit appear to be separate and apart from economic variables, underneath it all, lies the money angle. One can see this come through in political life,
for example, it is well known that politicians promise interest groups that they will do things in order to obtain money. One can argue that such public officials will do
good things once they get the money, but the ultimate goal is for fame and fortune. The nature of man is generally self-serving. In other words, politicians may seem to
be caring, but they are often looking after their own careers or concerned about their legacy. However, economics is not the end all and be all of social life as
