material conditions of a given society." In other words, and according to a student writing on this subject, for Marx, "human consciousness is shaped by material conditions of existence." That
is, people do not think up ideas and then create a positive or negative consequence. Rather, people live their lives and the conditions of that life dictate how they will
feel and what they will think. The concept actually has some support. Using examples from everyday life, it is easy to see what Marx was talking about. It is rather
obvious that people vote with their pocketbooks. That is a common expression but it relates to this concept that Marx embraced. That is, people who are wealthy will vote to
hold onto that wealth. They have a certain pride, happiness and a sense that they never want to let go of the possessions that comes with actually living their dreams.
Those who have very little in terms of materiality are unhappy. They vote for the Democratic candidate in the hopes that they will get something more from the government or
that something will change so that they too will have a chance to earn a lot of money. Their material conditions dictate their political ideas and values. It does
seem to be the case that political ideas are shaped by what people already have and how people live. It is not much of a leap to say that in
all things, material conditions of existence does shape consciousness. When discussing the concept it is also important to understand how Marx viewed the subject of consciousness. For Marx, consciousness exists
as an "awareness of material existence" (Siabarra 1995, 73). For Marx, ideas are not abstract (Siabarra 1995). Rather, ideas are equated with material and social existence (Siabarra 1995). According to
