Fear to Tread from the Marxist viewpoint. What is Marxist Criticism? There are many kinds of literary criticism, of which Marxist criticism is only one. Its a
"type of criticism in which literary works are viewed as the product of work and whose practitioners emphasize the role of class and ideology as they reflect, propagate, and even
challenge the prevailing social order" (Murfin). Its also part of a larger family of criticism called "sociological criticism" (Critical Approaches to Literature). Marxists believe that individuals dont have an
existence outside of society: "[I]ndividuals are creatures of social history, and social history is based on economy" (Comparison of Three Critical Approaches). Marxist theory in general espouses the
idea of class struggle, so its perhaps natural that Marxist critiques of literary works would focus on the same dynamic. That is, when examined from this viewpoint, "the literary
works of a period would reveal the state of the struggle between classes in the historical place and moment" (Comparison of Three Critical Approaches). A Marxist analysis of a book
should "focus on the authors analysis of class relations and what role class plays in the work" (Comparison of Three Critical Approaches). The analysis should also consider such points
as "class, rank, occupation and education," as well as "what the work says about oppression and social conflicts," how characters deal with them, and if theres any hope that things
