the twentieth century. Does the Communist Manifesto apply today? First, a student writing on this subject should relay some information about communism. What is it exactly? Most people know Marxs
communism to be something of a paradise--at least according to the author--but also something that has never worked in practice. For the authors, communism "may be summed up in
the single sentence: Abolition of private property" (Marx and Engels, 1848 [1992], 18 as qtd. in Boyer, 1998, 151). And while that may seem like a simplistic definition--and it
is--it speaks volumes. What is holding the current system together? It seems that in America, home ownership is what is viewed as vialbe and anyone who is not in that
class is considered to be a part of the working poor. They must pay rent and are generally overcharged for everything. Those who do not own homes cannot usually secure
good credit. They are deemed risky and so are charged more for their cell phones, car loans and so forth. They have no assets and are worthless in a society
built on wealth. A student writing on this subject ought to explain that Marx took things a step further. In respect to his theory, there is more than just home
ownership that is valuable. After all, a critic might contend that Marx was bent on proving the idea that ownership is the problem, and that in this society, ownership is
important, so Marxism is dead. However, Marxs ideas about alienation are very relevant today. His concept of alienation is in fact quite prevalent in an economy that is struggling.
