to societys woes, which is communism, has been a dismal failure. That is certainly something that most would agree with. Yet, in looking at Marxs thought and why it might
be obsolete, there are aspects of his ideas that continue to live. Which of his ideas help to explain social reality and which only confuse the peoples perceptions? A
student writing on this subject might want to point out that many of Marxs ideas are confusing. The bulk of his theories are presented in a volume called Karl Marx:
A Reader, a book edited by Jon Elster. A key idea in Marxist thought is historical materialism where he sees history as something progressing towards communism. The essence of this
theory is that society has gone through a myriad of changes and must go through more changes in order to finally reach the utopia that Marx sees as a communist
society. Yet, the final three parameters of this human journey involve capitalism, socialism, and finally communism. It is thought that while capitalist society is responsible for the bad things in
life, it is also necessary to achieve a communist state. Monies must be built up and apparently Marx concurs that the only way to establish this is through the use
