In this story the main character, Okonkwo, is constantly bombarded with the power of Imperialism and he ultimately falls apart, killing himself rather than live bereft of his culture which Imperialism has destroyed. The following paper examines Okonkwos tragedy through a Marxist lens. Marxism and the Tragedy of Okonkwo In first looking at the tragedy of Okonkwo through a Marxist lens it is important to set up some brief understanding of at least one aspect of Marxism. Marxist theory is a very complex theory and as such cannot be completely discussed herein. But, as one author notes, "All exploiting classes attempt to morally justify their class rule by portraying them, as the highest, most natural form of social development, deliberately concealing the system of exploitation by disguising and distorting the truth" and they essentially develop a "philosophy and morality to justify their ruling position in society" (Woods; Sewell). This can well apply to Okonkwo for he is very much the victim of Imperialism which is the body that believes it knows best, is the most civilized, and has a morality that is better than the Igbo people and Okonkwo. This is further illustrated in how Imperialsim clearly destroyed many cultures, like Okonkwos, as seen in the words of another author who notes, "The labour of colonial peoples was exploited on plantations and in mines" which is ultimately the white mans burden on various peoples around the world. In the case of Okonkwo he is a man who has long lived by the rules of his people. He even ostracizes himself, or agrees to being banished from his people, because he committed a crime.
