Marx more than a century ago, but it is based on history and the future. It is a theory that is essentially a paradigm but has its roots in his
broader concept of historical materialism. With that theory, Marx said that there is order in the universe, that there is a grand plan and that one day his ideas about
communism would be fulfilled. Of course, that sort of pie in the sky, wishful thinking is something that would perhaps land someone in an institution. The idea that one has
a theory so brilliant it encompasses the past, present and future is daunting. While Marx can claim authorship to the theory of historical materialism, many who have come after
him have used his ideas as a springboard for their own. Marxs work which focuses primarily on this concept is Contribution of the Critique of Political Economy which was
published in 1859 (McLeish, 1993). The core belief to come from this book is that progress is made in human history, which is characterized by the humans tendency to try
to master nature and accumulate technological capacities (1993). This idea has actually been played out more than perhaps Marx would have ever dreamed. At the same time, there is much
opposition. Dominant trends in feminism and postmodernism for example categorically rejected the notions of historical materialism (Stabile, 1995). Again, others have used the theory to create their own. Walter Benjamin
is for instance the first partisan of historical materialism to radically separate from the ideology of progress (Lowy, 1995). Today, the world is inundated with technological achievement. Just a
