through an intermediary" (p.52). Suffice it to say, Marx did not believe in religion and had in fact rejected it for himself. Karl Marx wrote many works with Friedrich Engels.
Interestingly, while Marx is quoted much more often, it was Engels who wrote more often on the subject of religion (Saxton, 2006). Although one would
like to say that Marx systematically investigated religion, his interests were largely unscientific. He explored religion early in life and rejected it; again, there has been some speculation that this
was due to his fathers rejection of his own heritage. In any event, Marx was a Hegelian and immersed himself in that philosophy for a time. Hegel was also an
important philosopher of the day. It should be noted that there were two camps of followers of Hegel. There were those deemed to the right, and of course, the other
to the left. The Right Hegelians were politically conservative and wanted to favor the state as well as religion (Kamenka, 1983). The left wing, also known as Young
Hegelians, emphasized the analysis of contradictions (Kamenka, 1983). The left looked at contradictions such as what appear in censorship or religion (Kamenka, 1983). The Young Hegelians were vehemently
opposed to religion (Marx & Engels, 1998). The Left used Hegel as their base to reject religion where the Right did quite the opposite. The Right used the philosophy
to promote religion and authority. The Young Hegelians saw it as a freedom to reason and explore other possibilities; they stressed that freedom and rationality were forms of autonomy. The
