the belief that when "teachers display high expectations and recognize that teaching itself is discipline," instruction will be successful (Dalhouse 24). From the first day of class, Collins makes it
clear to students precisely what she expects from students in terms of behavior, which is for students to behave in a manner that contributes to the learning process, for themselves
and for others. This requires teachers to establish a positive relationship with students so that discipline problems do not develop. When it does become necessary to discipline a child,
Collins feels that this should be done in manner that is caring and understanding of the needs of that particular child (Dalhouse 24). Discipline occurs within the context of an
organized classroom environment in which instruction follows a consistent strategy (Dalhouse 24). Collins insists that teachers who have low expectations for low-income, minority students do not aid them in reaching
learning goals or in learning to be successful in controlling their behavior (Dalhouse 24). Self-control and reflection on behavior are encouraged through "systematic and situational-based instruction" and also through "discussion
and teacher modeling" (Dalhouse 24). Collins integrates writing into classroom management as she has students to write concerning why they are "too intelligent to engage in disruptive behavior" (Dalhouse 24).
She also advocates the use of proverbs and poetry, as students to copy and memorize them, as these inspirational tools deliver "culturally relevant messages" concerning self-control and goal setting (Dalhouse
24). Dalhouse implemented Collins model of classroom management in her fourth grade classroom. The "cons" in implementation appear to be the patience and dedication required of the teacher
