The following examination of Luthers book looks at his text "Table Talk" is remarkable among his writing, not only for its theological insight and common sense wisdom, but also due to its length, as it consists of 6,596 entries (Bainton 301). Luthers students, after his death, "culled, classified and produced a handy volume," which they adorned with a "woodcut of Luther at the table with his family" (Bainton 301). The topics addressed in this text are on diverse subjects, which range from the "ineffable majesty of God the Omnipotent to the frogs in the Elbe" (Bainton 301). Luthers family typically had student boarders residing in their home and these students regarded meals with Luther as an "opportunity to continue their education," and they typically had notebooks within easy reach on which they would "scribble down every nugget and every clod" of wisdom that Luther uttered (Bainton 300). In "Table Talk," one finds "Pigs, popes, pregnancies, politics, and proverbs" jostle with one another for the readers attention (Bainton 301). There is no doubt that Luther covered a wide range of subject sin this volume. The first two selections are titled "Of Gods Word" and "Of Gods Works." In the first section, Luther begins by asserting his belief in the Bible as "Gods Word," and that "All things that have been, and are, in the world, and the manner of their being are described in the first book of Moses on the creation" (Luther).
