The sale of indulgences was a very profitable enterprise for the medieval church. Luther argued that salvation is not dependent on "works," that is, on what people do, but
rather on what they believe. Countering the arguments of the numerous theologians who supported the Churchs position at that time, Luther turned to scripture and scripture supported his position.
The following discussion compares the arguments made by Luther in his writing "Two Kinds of Righteousness" and the Letter of James from the New Testament. This comparison will demonstrate
that the author of this letter professes a theological stance that agrees with Luthers position, which is that humanity is saved by faith alone and not by actions.
According to Reumann (1997), when Luther realized that it is the experience of faith that leads to salvation, he remarked that he felt that he had been "born again" (p.
942). Luther felt overjoyed because he realized that it is not the actions of person, but the grace of God that equates with salvation. Luthers epiphany of understanding derived from
the discovery that "the just person," who is referred to in scripture (such as Roman 1:17) lives by faith and justification pertains solely to the saving righteousness of God (Reumann,
