brought to the general population by political and spiritual leaders. In exploring the ideas of love in the world of Abraham Joshua Heschel and Martin Luther King there are
differences. King looks at love as something that is equated with change. One can love ones neighbor for example and expect to see a transition. For Heschel, there are similarities,
but Heschel sees the impetus for change more equated with the will than with love. For King, love is the answer. Martin Luther King, Jr., a man for whom a
holiday is named and for whom many have great respect, was just a human being. Yet, his insights into human motivation are, in retrospect, uncanny and aligned with both New
Age and religious thought. Of course, King was himself a man of the cloth. Both King and Heschel come from a strong religious tradition. Still, Kings attachment to the idea
of love comes through in many of his speeches. Like Gandhi, he vied for peace and seemingly did have faith in mankind. King (1986) defines his idea of love
as follows: "In speaking of love I am not refereeing to some sentimental and affectionate emotion. It would be nonsense to urge men to love their oppressors in an affectionate
sense. Love in this connection means understanding good will as expressed in the Greek word agape. This means nothing sentimental or basically affectionate; it means understanding, redeeming good will for
all men, an ever-owing love which seeks nothing in return" (p. 88). Here, it is thought that the love King refers to, and expressed by him, is really just
good feelings toward all. There has to be a good natured love of ones neighbor. In the bible, it was not meant that people should feel passion for ones neighbor.
