for an end to segregation and bigotry. Its eloquent and clear and very closely argued. Although his disappointment in the other clergy is apparent, he never becomes abusive or
unreasonable; he simply points out why he is disappointed and states his belief that everyone involved can do better. The heart of the letter is his statement that it is
not only acceptable but a moral duty to refuse to obey unjust laws. The only difficulty lies in determining which laws are just and which are unjust. He
gives us a guideline for finding the difference: "A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust
law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law" (King, 1963). Dr. King is seeking a way for all men, no matter what their color,
to live in harmony. This is one of the basic principles of the Utopian philosophy, which says that mankind has a common dream: that of a better life.
This "better life" is unique to each individual who dreams it, since we all have differing ideas of what such a life is (Utopian philosophy). The best description of
Utopia therefore, is, "the ability for each person to live in their own vision of paradise" (Utopian philosophy). A full equal and just society would be a paradise for
Dr. King and his followers, and therefore his speech is directly linked to the Utopian moral philosophy, that everyone deserves to find his own heaven. When Dr. King writes that
