a more just society. But the criticism has been leveled that the King legend, which was ignited by the "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963, and bolstered by
the media, actually obscured the man. Further, public attention remains focused only on a very short period in Kings life, such that the overall struggle is no longer appreciated,
but has grown to the point where it has obscured the accomplishments of the man, and that perhaps those accomplishments were not as great as we think. This paper will
explore the argument that by focusing exclusively on King the "media darling," we have lost sight of the complexity of the struggle itself, and decide if that viewpoint has merit.
Discussion When Martin Luther King gave his marvelous speech in 1963, it was one of the first events ever televised live and at full length, and as
such, it made King a national hero and a media celebrity, and the speech itself iconic.1 Over the years, however, historians have become increasingly unhappy with the identification of the
civil rights movement itself with one single individual, no matter how charismatic he might be.2 They remind us that the struggle for equality has been going on for a
lot longer than just the years King was in the spotlight (usually considered the period from 1954-1968), and that focusing on his efforts "fails to capture vital aspects of what
made the movement possible and successful."3 King first came to national prominence as the leader of the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott in 1956, which occurred as his Southern Christian Leadership
Conference (SCLC) was just getting off the ground.4 According to Adam Fairclough, who worked with King in those early days, the SCLC wasnt very effective in the beginning, and King
