was addressed to several clergymen but has become a very powerfull "public appeal" that is "relevant to all Americans" (Mathias, 1993). The following paper analyzes the rhetoric within this letter.
Rhetorical Situation Exigence is essentially a situation or condition that is presented to the audience. As the students text indicates, "Exigence is real-life dramatic situation that signals that
something controversial has occurred and that people should try to make some sense of it" (71). The situation presented by King is that of injustice. He is in jail because
of it, and he is arguing that justice needs to be done for the African American people and all people: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" (King, 1963).
The reader, or the audience, at the time of the letter was several different clergy members whom King was responding to in relationship to claims they had made. "This
response to a published statement by eight fellow clergymen from Alabama" (King, 1963). In essence, he was aiming his letter at those who did not seem to understand the depth
and intensity of the problem of justice. The author, of course, is Martin Luther King Jr. and his authority is well grounded. He is a trustworthy author, and a
very wise author. As such he has the authority and the presence that makes his letter intriguing to many who are also concerned with the society in which we live
