Socrates arguments in Platos Crito. Martin Luther King Jr. and Socrates Kings Letter From Birmingham Jail is a letter written by King to his "Fellow Clergymen." He was
imprisoned for simply conducting a non-violent protest. During his particular time in history the African American people were oppressed and not allowed many freedoms that were allowed other citizens, primarily
white citizens. He was writing this letter in order to persuade his fellow clergymen, religious men from all different religions, to reconsider how they were approaching the issue of civil
rights in the nation. King was a man who was not happy with the way in which many African American preachers and ministers were dealing with civil rights, preferring to
simply wait it out until things changed on their own. King was indicating that non-violence was his primary way of approaching the needs concerning civil rights and that through protesting
urgent changes could be made without waiting, like docile African Americans. This is evident in the following excerpt from his letter: "You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But
your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want
to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place
in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the citys white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative" (King, 1983). King essentially believed, and believed strongly,
