that allowed him to make a tremendous difference in the lives of all people. He was a man that was sorely needed for the Civil Rights movement, and a man
who stood to alter, even if only slightly, how Americans examined and judged one another. In the following paper we examine what society was like before Martin Luther King, what
life was like when he was active, and what life is like today, illustrating how Martin Luther King was truly a man of his times who stood to deserve being
written positively down in history. Before Martin Luther King Slavery had been abolished in the late 19th century, but still African Americans were not given equal rights or
equal opportunities. WWI came along and the African American was used as the nation saw fit. Then the Great Depression hit the country and African Americans, in relationship to their
needs, were ignored for the entire country was in chaos. After the depression came WWII, where African Americans were sent off to die, but yet came home to the same
lack of rights or opportunities. Now, during the 1950s African American did have a few more opportunities than they had previously possessed. But, these opportunities and these rights were
more difficult for them to obtain than the average white person. They could go to college, but only certain colleges and even then it was difficult for them to become
admitted for one reason or another. Legally they had the right to vote, but it was difficult to get registered. In short, the country made very opportunity, every right, incredibly
hard to locate and harder to obtain. Legally, however, it looked good on paper perhaps. Also, during the 1950s the white communities were living very well and very peacefully.
