The name of Martin Luther King, Jr. is immediately recognizable as one of the principal architects of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Through his speeches and his writing, King was able to articulate the feelings of his generation of African-Americans and to motivate them toward political activism. The name of A. Philip Randolph is far less familiar outside of the African-American community; however, like King, Randolph was one of the principal motivator of his generation and a pioneer in gaining civil rights for African-Americans.
