system. This paper discusses the novel as to what London is really saying, whether or not its possible to bridge class barriers, and what is thought of as success in
the society he describes. Discussion Martin Eden is a complex and multi-faceted character. He is introduced at the very beginning of the book, a sailor on land and therefore
out of his element. "He wore rough clothes that smacked of the sea"; ...he was manifestly out of place in the spacious hall in which he found himself ... his
legs spread unwittingly, as if the level floors were tilting up and sinking down to the heave and lunge of the sea" (London). He is uncomfortable and he shows it,
and his companion Arthur picks up on his disquiet, which seems to amuse him. Eden feels that the rooms are too small, even though in reality there is enough room
for "half a dozen to walk abreast" (London). He is big, bulky, the very picture of masculinity and toughness. But there are surprises coming. He sees an oil painting and
stops to look at it because it had "caught and held him" (London). While his friend reads a letter, Eden notices books on the table that are unfamiliar to him,
and he begins reading the poetry of Swinburne, "forgetful of where he was, his face glowing" (London). He decides to remember the author and try to find more of his
poetry, it has touched him that deeply (London). He is so lost in it that he doesnt notice a pretty girl come into the room until Arthur says "Ruth, this
is Mr. Eden" (London). He is thrilled by this-not the girl, not at this point-but at being called "Mister" when all his life hes been just "Eden" or "Mister" or
