arts, learning them and generally being intrigued by the ancient arts. The following paper examines the history and types of Chinese martial arts. The paper then discusses Japanese and Korean
martial arts and then finishes with a discussion of popular figures and the culture. Chinese Martial Arts According to one particular author the Chinese martial arts have really
been in existence, in one way another, for perhaps 2000 years of more (Short History of Chinese Martial Arts, 2005). It apparently arose out of a need to fight differently
and more effectively in war (Short History of Chinese Martial Arts, 2005). Since then "The martial arts became a way of life for many, evolving into a highly structured institution"
(Short History of Chinese Martial Arts, 2005). In relationship to specifics it appears that records exist that demonstrate that there were exercises known as "hit and thrust" back in the
Shang dynasty which was during the 17th and 16th century B.C. (Short History of Chinese Martial Arts, 2005). In relationship to group practices and individual practice there are records of
such practice that date as far back as 1066-256 B.C. during the Zhou dynasty (Short History of Chinese Martial Arts, 2005). With each dynasty there appeared to arise a
different focus on various versions of their martial arts. For example, during the Qin dynasty (221 - 206 B.C.) there was jiaoti which was a form of combat used in
the military and it was also considered a sort of athletic sport as well (Short History of Chinese Martial Arts, 2005). The notion of using swords for formal arts was
